Chatrandom is the survivor of this category. It launched in 2011 as a Chatroulette alternative, kept running through the whole boom, watched Omegle shut down in 2023, and is still matching strangers in 2026 while most of its contemporaries are dead or delisted. Fifteen years is a long time in random chat.

What is Chatrandom?

Chatrandom is a browser-based random video chat operated by Small World Media LLC, a US company. The core loop is the one everybody knows:

• Allow the camera, get paired with one stranger, click to skip.
• Themed group rooms sit alongside the one-on-one roulette, organized by interest.
• A separate gay chat section splits off part of the audience.
• A text-only mode exists for people who do not want the camera.
• Gender and country filters steer matching, and this is where the money is.

That is more surface area than most rivals bother with. It is also fifteen years of accumulated features rather than one designed product, and it shows.

What is free and what it costs

Free gets you the random matching, the rooms, and the ads. There are a lot of ads - the free tier leans on them hard, and the experience is cluttered in a way that newer, leaner rivals are not.

The paid tier is where the filters live. Chatrandom's subscription is reported at roughly $8 a month for gender filter, country filter, and an ad-free experience, with other plans quoted from about $7 a week up to around $20 depending on length and promotion. Worth naming plainly: filters behind a paywall is the category norm, not a Chatrandom quirk. Emerald Chat gates its gender filter behind a paid tier, and Camsurf does the same. Is Chatrandom safe?

The honest read, in both directions:

• Moderation exists but is inconsistent. Reviewers who test the category keep landing on the same word. Explicit content surfaces most in the free random mode, which is exactly where a first-time visitor starts. It is not the unmoderated free-for-all Omegle became, and it is not Camsurf either.
• The age gate is a checkbox. Chatrandom's own terms state an 18-and-over requirement, and some third-party reviews report a much lower floor. Both can be true at once because nothing verifies either number. Treat it as adults-only regardless of what any page says.

• Aging surface. Fifteen years of bolted-on modes makes for a site that feels its age against newer competitors.
