What Happened to Chatous? Why It Vanished From iPhone (2026)

What happened to Chatous? The iPhone app vanished from the App Store, the Android app has not been updated since 2023, and here is what still works.

If you are reading this, you probably went looking for Chatous on your iPhone and could not find it. You are not imagining it. The app is gone from the App Store.

The short answer: Chatous has not officially shut down, but it is fading. The iPhone app was removed, the Android app has not had an update in three years, and the website still loads but looks untouched for a long time. Nobody has announced anything.

Here is what we could confirm in October 2026, and where to go if you miss it.

What Chatous was

Chatous launched in November 2012 as a one-on-one chat app with a twist: instead of being matched with anyone, you could pick a topic and be paired with someone who wanted to talk about the same thing. You chatted under an anonymous handle, with no photos on your profile, at least at first.

It caught on. By December 2014, TechCrunch reported that more than two billion messages had been sent and the app had been downloaded more than three million times, as Chatous closed a $2.1 million seed round led by General Catalyst. Over the years it added hashtags for interests, expiring photos and video chat, but at heart it stayed a text chat with strangers.

For a lot of people it was the quieter, text-first alternative to Omegle.

What happened to Chatous on iPhone

The iPhone app was removed from the App Store.

  • July 2025: The listing, "Chatous - Chat with new people" by Chatous Inc., was still live in archived snapshots. It was rated 17+ for "Frequent/Intense Sexual Content or Nudity", averaged 2.8 stars from about 1,200 ratings, and its last update was version 3.8.36 from May 2023, with the release note "Spring cleaning and summer bug fixes".
  • March 2026: The same listing returned "not found".
  • October 2026: We looked the app up by its App Store ID in ten countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia and India. It is not available in any of them, and its App Store page returns an error.

So the app was pulled somewhere between July 2025 and March 2026.

Why was it removed?

Nobody has said. We found no statement from Chatous and none from Apple. Here is what we do know.

On February 6, 2026, inside that window, Apple updated its App Review Guidelines to "clarify that apps with random or anonymous chat are subject to" its user-generated content rule. That rule, guideline 1.2, now says:

Apps with user-generated content or services that end up being used primarily for pornographic content, Chatroulette-style experiences, random or anonymous chat, objectification of real people ... do not belong on the App Store and may be removed without notice.

The same guideline requires chat apps to filter objectionable content, let users report and block, respond to reports quickly, and publish contact details.

An app that had not been updated since May 2023 was badly placed to meet any new requirement. Whether Apple removed it, or Chatous pulled it rather than update it, we cannot say. What the rule does tell you is that a comeback on iPhone looks unlikely.

Is Chatous still on Android?

Yes, for now. The Google Play listing was live when we checked in October 2026:

  • 10 million+ downloads
  • 3.5 stars from about 199,000 reviews
  • Rated Mature 17+, with in-app purchases from $0.99 to $199.99 per item
  • Last updated August 29, 2023

Three years without an update is a long time for an app that connects strangers. It still installs, but nobody appears to be working on it.

Does chatous.com still work?

The website still loads. Its homepage still offers to let you "start chatting without an account", plus text and video chat and topic tags.

It also shows its age. The homepage still links to Google+, which Google shut down in 2019. The site's About page is an unedited website template, still reading "Cover is a one-page template for building simple and beautiful home pages". Its terms list a Palo Alto startup accelerator as the company address.

We did not test whether the website still matches you with people. Google's search suggestions for the name are full of "is Chatous down" and "Chatous not working", so plenty of people are asking.

The company behind Chatous moved on

This part explains a lot.

The Android app is published by Castle Global. That is the same company name that appears as the mailing address in the privacy policy of Hive, an AI company that sells content moderation to other platforms. TechCrunch reported in 2021 that Hive was valued at $2 billion, and described it as a pivot from an earlier consumer app called Kiwi. Business databases list Chatous, Kiwi and Melon among the same company's early consumer apps.

That is a common startup story, not a scandal. A team builds consumer apps, finds a bigger business, and the old apps are left running on their own. It does explain why Chatous looks frozen in 2023.

Did Chatous shut down?

Not officially. There is no shutdown notice, the Android app still installs and the website still loads.

But nothing suggests anyone is maintaining it, and its terms say it can "modify or discontinue, temporarily or permanently, the Service (or any part thereof) with or without notice." If you depend on it, assume it could go at any time.

Is Chatous safe to use now?

With more care than most. Three things to know:

  • No updates since 2023. That includes security and safety fixes. An app that pairs you with strangers needs both.
  • Not everyone is an adult. The app stores rate it 17+, but the website's own disclaimer only asks users under 13 to stay away and those under 18 to get a parent's permission. Parental-control sites such as Net Nanny list Chatous among messaging apps to keep children off.
  • Your old chats and photos. If you had an account, assume anything you shared is still stored. Its privacy policy says it may use chat data for research on its users.

The general rules apply too: keep your name, location and other accounts out of the chat, and leave anyone who pushes you somewhere else. The full list is in how to talk to strangers online safely.

Apps like Chatous

What people miss about Chatous is usually some mix of four things: one-on-one chat, text first, an anonymous handle, and matching by topic.

  • Yappo - one-on-one anonymous text chat with a random stranger. Free, no account, no download, and no camera. It runs in the browser, so it works on iPhone and Android without an app store in between. One honest difference: Yappo pairs you at random, not by topic.
  • Uhmegle - keeps Omegle's text-or-video choice and adds interest tags. No account needed.
  • Emerald Chat - interest matching, text and video, with a guest mode and paid extras.
  • Thundr - text or video with interest matching, but you have to sign in first.

One thing worth knowing after the February 2026 guideline change: any random chat app on the iPhone App Store now sits under that rule, and can be removed without notice. A website you open in Safari does not depend on Apple's approval.

The short version

  • Chatous is not officially dead, but it is not being looked after.
  • The iPhone app disappeared between July 2025 and March 2026. No reason was given.
  • Apple's February 2026 rule on random and anonymous chat makes a return to iPhone unlikely.
  • The Android app still installs but has not been updated since August
    1. The website still loads.
  • The company behind it went on to build Hive, an AI moderation business.

Frequently asked questions

What happened to Chatous?

It is fading rather than shut down. The iPhone app was removed from the App Store sometime between July 2025 and March 2026, the Android app is still on Google Play but has not been updated since August 2023, and chatous.com still loads. There has been no shutdown announcement and no explanation from Chatous or Apple.

Did Chatous shut down?

Not officially. We found no shutdown notice from Chatous, and its website and Android app are still up. But the apps have not been updated since 2023, the website still links to Google+, which closed in 2019, and its terms let it discontinue the service at any time without notice. Treat it as a service on autopilot.

Why is Chatous not on the App Store?

Nobody has said. The listing was live in July 2025 and returned 'not found' by March 2026. In between, on February 6, 2026, Apple revised its App Review Guidelines to say that apps with random or anonymous chat fall under its user-generated content rules, which say apps used mainly for random or anonymous chat 'do not belong on the App Store and may be removed without notice'. That fits the timing, but it is not a confirmed reason.

Can I still use Chatous on iPhone?

Only through the browser. You cannot download the app any more. If it is already on your phone it may still open, but it has not been updated since May 2023 and nothing guarantees it keeps working. The website, chatous.com, still loads in Safari and offers chat without an account.

Is Chatous safe?

Use it with care. The apps have had no updates, including security fixes, in three years. The app stores rate it 17+, while the website's own disclaimer allows users from 13 with a parent's permission, so you cannot assume everyone is an adult. Parental-control sites such as Net Nanny list it among chat apps to keep children off.

What are some apps like Chatous?

For anonymous one-on-one text chat that works on any phone, including iPhone, without an app store, Yappo pairs you with a random stranger in the browser - free, no account, no download. If you miss Chatous's topic tags, Uhmegle and Emerald Chat both let you match on interests.
